Using wood for a follow rest

I don't have a follow rest for my lathe and I needed one to profile a barrel. I just kept it really simple, it worked great, no chatter at all over a 28" barrel that I turned down to .900 with a step for milling an octagon section. The smoke is from lubricating oil not the wood burning.
