This was a bit of a different one for me, but I was so excited to get back into planning a detailed discussion video again. There was still a bunch I didn't get to cover in here (like... the time periods these books emerged from and how that impacts what the books were about. Or more about Alice Walker and her specific desire to unearth the stories of black women in the past) but I am so glad I got to talk a bit about some of it. Original title of this video - "Woman to Woman: The Importance of Women Relaying Their Own History" BOOKS DISCUSSED The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield The Color Purple by Alice Walker Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg BONUS READING YOU COULD DO --Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston (an essential addition to the storytelling narrative) --In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens by Alice Walker (dive further into Alice Walker's journey to revive narratives of the past and the history of how black women told stories) --Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers: A History of Lesbian Life in 20th Century America by Lillian Faderman (get educated on lesbian history) --All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens Through the Ages edited by Saundra Mitchell (reassert queer history into the past, stories for queer people BY queer people) --Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson (what I feel is an essential follow up to Alice Walker and Zora Neale Hurston in terms of understanding stories, learning the nuanced internal lives of black women, and how creation allows stories to be carried forward.) --Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore (an excellent book for unearthing the past, and why keeping stories alive is essential) Appreciate the content I make?
