Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says the Caribbean region needs to make its banking sector more attractive and resilient to withstand international banking conditions. He was speaking at the end of the Two-Day 18th Special Meeting of the CARICOM Heads of Government held at the Hilton Trinidad. Prime Minister Rowley said Republic Bank saw a business opportunity for growth in announcing it would take over Scotia Bank's assets in nine Caribbean countries. However, he said he was disturbed that international banks are leaving the region, and that is not a good thing. The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, said the Caribbean region has been under-performing in terms of growth for some time now. She said that's why the Heads of Government decided to restructure the CARICOM Commission on the Economy.
