In all cases, I presoaked the yarn for 20+ min.  I mixed the dye in 1/2 cup of water, then added it to a pot of 8 cups of water + 1 T white vinegar immediately before dip dyeing the yarn.  After 5-10 min, I added more vinegar as needed to absorb the remaining color.
