Michael Smieja, Director of We Can Grow

After years of owning and operating businesses, Michael Smieja's attention turned to the connection between food and community while working for the Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships. Since 2010, he has been active in urban agriculture, founding Buchanan Street Farms in Northeast Minneapolis. In 2012 along with friends and local partners, Smieja founded We Can Grow to further community development through food security and education.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
