(5 Oct 2018) Members of the main political parties held rallies ahead of Sunday's presidential elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Elections in Bosnia on Sunday risk cementing the ethnic divisions of the country's brutal war, as a pro-Russian nationalist runs for the three-member presidency and politicians seeking other posts campaign on war wounds rather than reforms. Some 3.3 million voters in Bosnia will choose a complex network of institutions created by US-brokered peace accords that ended the 1992-95 carnage after more than 100,000 people died and millions were left homeless. Bosnia today consists of a Serb entity, a Muslim-Croat entity and a central government that holds both together loosely. Voters are choosing the three members of the Bosnian presidency, the president of the Bosnian Serb entity, assembly seats at all levels and cantonal authorities. The results could determine whether Bosnia is strengthened as a unified, multiethnic country or fragments again along ethnic lines. The vote on Sunday is seen as a test of the West's strategy of offering EU and NATO membership to encourage war-torn Balkan nations to solve open issues stemming from the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990'.
