This is a fun lesson which explains the subgenre of Jazz called Modal Jazz. Modal Jazz is a period in jazz which began in the early 1960s Jazz players like Miles Davis , bill Evans , John Coltrane , McCoy Tyner and Pharoah Sanders. Started to concentrate on using modes as their main mode of improvisation and not chords. This allowed for more interesting melodic invention . This lesson shows you how modal Jazz is similar to African music because of the use of few chords and the emphasis on modes and scales.The song Denko by Malian musician is a very easy song to show an example of this.
