Buddhists in Thailand and across Asia marked the most important day on the Buddhist calendar on June the first, Wisakhabucha Day. The annual national holiday falls on the full moon of the sixth lunar month and is considered one of the most important Buddhist holidays of the year, as it commemorates the three most significant events in the life of Lord Buddha: his birth, enlightenment and then death, which are said to have miraculously been on the same day and month.

While schools, banks and government services close down for the day, many Buddhists flock to temples to make merit and listen to Dhamma preaching by Buddhist monks.
Those observing Wisakha Bucha Day may also more strictly follow the five precepts of Buddhist teachings, such as eating only vegetarian food, abstaining from alcohol and other ‘immoral acts’.

In the evening, temples glow with the light from hundreds of candles under a full moon as merit makers take part in a procession; encircling the temple’s central prayer hall. Participants hold candles and incense while circling the building three times.

Buddhists wishing to practice renunciation often take the opportunity during Wisakha Bucha to don white robes and stay at a temple for several days while observing the eight precepts of Buddhism; practicing meditation and mental discipline.
