"Trophies and Controversy at Mosport" also on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/13570884 (a contraction of Motor Sport) Mosport International Raceway - Bowmanville, ON Rounds 4-5 July 8-11, 2010 Local Superbike racer Marcel Irnie finished third and seventh at the Parts Canada Superbike Championship Series at Mosport International Raceway. It was a turbulent race weekend. After finishing second and third at the National Championship Rounds 2 & 3 at Calgary Race City, Irnie was confident he could get a podium and maybe a win at Mosport two weeks later. He enjoys fast tracks with good cornering speed. The Mosport track is legendary and many great races have raced there. Mike Halewood, Gilles Villeneuve, Steve Baldwin, Steve Crevier, Jordon Szoke, and up-and-coming superstars Jodie Christie, Cody Matechuk, Steven Nickerson and Raphael Archambault. The venerable circuit has many elevation changes and blind corners, so learning the track and gaining confidence would be a difficult task. For Thursday's first official practice session, Marcel brought out his 2008 IrnieRacing.com ZX-6R on used tires. Irnie's best time in practice was good only for twelfth place, almost 4 seconds away from the top spot. For the afternoon session, Marcel turned to his trusty Seattle Tool 2005 ZX-6RR. Now he was finding his groove as he clocked a 1:28.449; good enough for third spot. For the first race, Marcel got off to a great start, taking second place behind Quebec's Raphael Archambault. As the race unfolded, Marcel settled into third place but found that his clutch was slipping as he powered into the back straight. Marcel had to loosen his clutch cable on the go. Nevertheless, Marcel was able to find speed in other portions of the circuit as he could carry more speed into most of the corners compared to his competitors. Marcel worked his way into second place but unfortunately his slipping clutch would allow Archambault to pull a 15-bike length lead on the back straight. Marcel charged hard and made the pass for first place but again was passed due to his slipping clutch on the back straight. On the final back straight, both Archambault and Steve Nickerson passed Marcel. Marcel put up a good fight for second with Nickerson, but eventually finished the race in third spot. For Sunday morning practice prior to the second race, Marcel decided to use his 2008 IrnieRacing.com ZX-6R. This bike was down on power but handled very well. He forgot this was a very fast course. At the start of the second race, Marcel entered corner one in second spot. By corner three, it became evident that his bike was not running well on the new untried race fuel and his power output was now worse than before. Soon, several riders blew past Marcel on the back straight and he was in fifth place and then in sixth and then in seventh. Marcel closely followed his competitor and friend, Bodhi Edie, and saw that he had more speed than Edie on several corners, particularly Moss Corner, turn 5a and 5b. Marcel showed Edie his wheel on the inside on Moss Corner. When they came around again, Edie bobbled, and Marcel made for an inside pass taking the tightest line possible next to the curbing. "The Moss Corner is a test of skill and a show for the spectators" [STERLING MOSS]. Marcel stated, "I felt that the worst that could happen was that Bodie and I would go side by side through the corner. Unfortunately, Bodie did not see me and cut across into me. The bikes rubbed together and were stuck together. Neither of us could steer and we headed for the dirt at the edge of the track. Bodie hit the dirt and lost his rear tire. I stayed upright. I felt sick inside and if I had to do over again, I would never have attempted to make that pass. I apologized to Bodie and his family and they graciously accepted.'' Marcel finished in seventh place and Bodhi Edie was unhurt and finished in eleventh spot. Marcel has several HD cameras on his motorcycle and has prepared video documentaries of his races at Calgary Racecity, and Mosport Raceway. Available at irnieracing.com
