Rinpoche began the teaching explaining that one’s family in this life, that we have so much grasping to, than to other people, this is by labelling “my” this and that. But from beginningless rebirths all sentient beings have been your mother and father, husband and so on. Rinpoche then spoke about the kindness of the mother, who took care of you, gave up her life for so many years and protected you from so many dangers. Rinpoche then spoke about animals, we don’t know, they may have been our family in the past. He explained how he blesses the dogs in New York by reciting mantras to them. But when we are partial and have attachment to one animal but feed another animal to it alive (like feeding alive crickets to lizards etc.) so have to be careful the karma that is created, the karma of killing. Rinpoche then gave example of stories of different animals and karma as well as the kindness of animal mothers, caring for their babies. Rinpoche explained the most important way to repay the kindness of the mother is by generating bodhichitta and by becoming enlightened to free the numberless sentient beings.
