March 7, 2015, marked the 300th birthday of Colonel Ephraim Williams Jr. ,the college’s namesake. In his last will and testament, Col. Williams called for the “Support and maintenance of a free School (in a township west of fort Massachusetts, Commonly Called the west township) for Ever.” His estate provided $11,000 to carry out his vision- a gift that has since launched tens of thousands of others, allowing Williams to become one of the most highly respected colleges in the U.S. and the world. On Williams' birthday, the Williams community came together to reflect on his legacy, considering broader themes such as the evolution of thought and transformative education and philanthropy.
