I don't know much about this song except that when I first heard it by Ronnie Drew I was entranced. This song eventually led me to the Dubliners. Many people have covered it, but I know virtually nothing about its history except the setting is in Dublin. If any one knows who wrote the song, or when it was first published I would certainly appreciate the information. Raymondcrooke was kind enough to offer some insight to this song so please look at his comment. I did forget to mention about the "double meaning" :-) similar to the Lusty Young Smith but not nearly as obvious.
