Today marks the Fifth Anniversary of the Marikana Massacre. Exactly five years ago, Thirty-Four miners were shot dead by police officers at a Koppie near the Lonmin mine near Brits. Mineworkers, most of them affiliates of mining union AMCU, had embarked on a strike for a R12 500 Minimum Wage. In 2012 President Jacob Zuma appointed a Commission of Inquiry chaired by Retired Judge Ian Farlam to investigate the events that led to the tragedy. While the Final Report was released by President Zuma in 2015, the implementation of its recommendations has become a bone of contention. This as stakeholders in the sector and the families of the deceased say, little or no change has happened in and around Marikana five years on. Most Lonmin workers still live in poverty and squalor, albeit promises by Lonmin to adhere to its Social and Labour Plans. But, will those implicated in the Marikana killings ever be prosecuted?
