Eurogroup finance minister are ready to get the European Union to help Latvia deal with its severely negative impact of the financial crisis, says European Commissioner for Monetary Affairs Joaquin Almunia.

The EU Finance Ministers, meeting today in Luxembourg for their monthly talks on the economic situation of the eurozone, agreed that national governments should stick to the rules regarding deficit and debt, despite the current crisis, and calls from France to exempt crisis-related budget deficits from normal EU budget rules.

French Economy Minister Christine Lagarde last week proposed loosening the European Union's debt rules, saying deficits arising from economic stimulus packages should be dealt with independently.
