Joseph Smith at age 14, after reading a verse in the Bible (James 1:5), went into a clearing in a forest near his home to pray to sincerely ask God which church he should join. God physically appeared and presented His son, Jesus Christ. Jesus told Joseph that he was to join none of the churches.

Later, through following instructions given to him from Jesus Christ and messengers sent from Christ, Joseph Smith reestablished the true church of Jesus Christ that had become lost and corrupted since the time Jesus established it during His mortal ministry. Along with reestablishing the church, Joseph Smith translated ancient golden plates written by ancient-American prophets who also testified of Jesus Christ's role as the Savior of our eternal salvation, and he had it published as "The Book of Mormon".

The LDS (Mormon) church today uses the Bible, The Book of Mormon, and other revelation given in modern times through living prophets to help them navigate themselves and their families through life and back into the presence of God in Heaven.
