Patriarch of Constantinople arrives in Bucharest for cathedral dedication

(23 Nov 2018) Bells rang out for the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople as he arrived in Bucharest for the dedication of a cathedral to mark 100 years since Romania became a modern state. The Istanbul-based patriarch Bartholomew I, considered the "first among equals" in the Orthodox world, praised the Romanian Orthodox Church on Friday for its "conciliatory and peaceful" nature. The "Salvation of the People" Cathedral will be dedicated Sunday. Standing at 120 metres high (395 feet) and 126 meters (415 feet) long, the church said the unfinished building has cost 110 million euros ($125 million).The government and the city hall contributed. In October, Bartholomew I decided to recognize the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Russia in turn broke off ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate. Romania has called on both sides to find a solution.
