Late last month, Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn North, Assistant Chief Jeffrey Maddrey and retired NYPD Detective Todd Taylor hosted the third annual Cops and Kids DJ Competition. It was a lively event where police officers and community members of all ages gathered together for an afternoon of musical competition on the turntables. The event kicked off at noon in Sanders Studios in Brooklyn, where talented young contestants of all ages competed for a chance to win prizes. Police officers flexed their musical skills, and along with local disk jockeys, taught youth how to use the turntables and equipment. Attendees and contestants enjoyed a surprise appearance from the legendary American hip hop disk jockey and three time Grammy Award Nominated Multi-Platinum Producer DJ Scratch, who performed a demonstrative set for the crowd, and shared his wisdom to the aspiring young disk jockeys. DJ Scratch strongly reminded young contestants that they are all winners by simply applying themselves and entering the competition. He urged the youth contestants to stay focused and to practice as much as possible. DJ Annie Red, the youngest in the competition at seven years of age, middle school student DJ Milz, and high school student DJ Rashad won first place awards for their respective categories. The event, now in its third successful year, is a testimony to how efforts in bringing police and communities together can be beneficial for all. The event's founder, retired NYPD Detective Todd Taylor, emphasized the importance of community engagement by saying, “When you have the community come together like this, it is proof that police and community relations can improve, and together we can continue the mission to help eliminate the violence in the community.” The police and community members look forward to what future musical events are in store.
