At the age of 17 I spent a week in Dublin at a folk festival of music song and dance. I was a dancer at that time and it was on this trip that the first seeds were planted that grew into a passion for folk songs. We travelled around in a coach and as often happens, someone would begin to sing, then everyone would join in. I learned The Wild Colonial Boy on that coach, but in particular this silly song which was sung by a Geordie who was with the Stafford Morris Men with whom I became friends. Sung by a true Geordie, the words were sometimes unintelligible to me, but having translated some of the dialect words, here is my version of Johnny's Marble.
A ginnel for those who are not aware is a narrow space between two houses to allow air-flow and drainage. Sometimes the ginnel is only inches wide as must have been the case here.
