(10 Oct 2018) An unusually large lunar meteorite is up for sale right here on earth for those who can't blast off to the moon to gather a few rocks. The 12-pound lunar meteorite was discovered in a desert of the Northwest African nation of Mauritania last year. The rock – classified as NWA 11789 – may have plunged to Earth thousands of years ago after another meteorite slammed onto the lunar surface. Boston-based RR Auction says the rock is expected to sell for at least $500,000 at an online auction that runs for a week, beginning on Thursday. The meteorite is actually comprised of six fragments that fit together like a puzzle. Geoff Notkin, star of television's "Meteorite Men" and CEO of Aerolite Meteorites, is selling the rock. He says most lunar meteorites are the size of a walnut, so this one is "extraordinarily unusual."
