3:36 - Danemon Ban - Stage 2 drops us straight into a boss fight. Danemon Ban you may recognize as a very unassuming generic from the Samurai Warriors series, but he has a fun name to say and he helps out Yukimura in SW1 Osaka Castle, so his name always stuck with me. Here he's a straight up villain with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Danemon becomes a regular enemy type later in the game, so as you might imagine he's not too tough. He's got a massive sword he likes to swing but despite it's appearance, you can actually block it. Dodging is an option, but blocking ends up being the better of the two in my experience. He can also summon some basic enemies to join him, and he can unleash a powered up magical slam attack on you for some decent damage. Magic in this game functions differently than the other games. Rather than unleash a magic attack, you slash an enemy and then you can press Square to hit them with a Critical attack. Criticals can also be triggered by attacking in the direction an enemy attack is coming from, but the timing is VERY precise. Magic attacks guarantee you that damage. Critical attacks can also be chained into other enemies, so you can deal massive damage to multiple at once, provided they are near each other. The number of times you can do this can be upgraded with Skill Points. However, Magic attacks are useless on bosses that cannot be Critical attacked. In those instances, it's best to use Magic to give yourself some I-frames and avoid a hit. If you hit Danemon with a Magic attack, and then Critical him, he will fall to the ground. Enemies that are prone are vulnerable to a Finisher attack. You can do this by running up to them and pressing Square. The game can be finicky however and sometimes won't register it, so you may do a normal attack instead. I find it works better if you aren't pointing the analog in any direction. Most characters can do additional attacks with Finishers by repeatedly pressing Square. Soki for example will twist his sword into whatever enemy he just stabbed before retrieving it. After Danemon Ban's defeat, we'll win Stage 2 and be taken to the Hideout. 8:30 - Hideout - This is an in-between area between chapters. Here you can talk to party members, buy/sell from the shop, upgrade your character and weapons, and save. Other features open up as we go along, such as the ability to backtrack to areas we've visited in the past. It's wise to check the shop often and pawn off anything you don't need. Mostly you can buy items at the shop, which later include stat upgrades, but you may find yourself wanting to buy healing items as well. You don't need to be to frugal, as you can always go and grind if anything gives you trouble. This game has a TON of weapons. The shop sells them, but you can also find them in chests in stages and win them by getting a Gold Medal in Tests of Valor. All characters have 3 types of weapons: Slow, normal, and fast. For Soki, slow weapons lower his S-string to 3 hits, all of which are slow. Normal is a 4 hit combo at a faster speed. Fast is a 5 hit combo at an even faster speed. The number of attacks differ for each character, but that's generally how it works. This is a bit broken however. Because the speed of the weapon ONLY affects the S-string so if you just use Soki's other attacks you can have the damage of a slow weapon type with none of the downsides. Also, your damage is adjusted based on how many hits your S-string does, so even if a fast weapon has higher attack points, a slow weapon may deal more damage anyways. So slow weapons are easily the best in the game, which I only realized towards the end after investing a ton of upgrades into a fast weapon. -_-
