The thief was dying a CRIMINAL. He said so himself that he was justly being punished for his crime. 
He was not a saint who lived a perfect life.
He was a sinner in need of a Saviour.
None of us are perfect!
None of us have lived perfect lives! 
We all need a Saviour!
We all need forgiveness of sin!
