(23 Nov 1989) }QUOTE REF KOREAN EX-PRESIDENT CHUN EXILE ANNIVERSARY APPEARANCE: SOUTH
GS27118910 KOREA. Former south Korean President Chun doo-hwan marked
27.11.89 his first year of self-exile November 23 by appearing in
public for the time since entering a Buddhist monastery.
during a one-hour ceremony at the Baekdam Temple on the east
coast, Chun, a buddhist convert, consecrated "Sarira," a
relic of Buddha, and spoke to about 5,000 people, admitting
to some mistakes but continuing to deny charges that he had
harmed the nation. "Because of short wisdom and ability, I
committed some trial and error while in office but the claim
that I squandered national treasure and ruined the country is
wrong," he said. Chun, who stepped down February 1988 at the
end of his seven-year term, went into rural exile nine months
later after apologizing for corruption and misdeeds committed
under his administration. Date Shot: 23.11.89
