Lord Shiva is everyone’s favourite. He is the one who leads a simple life, dances with a free mind, smoke a chillum and loves his followers. The entire month of Shravana is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees observe fast on every Monday in Shravana which is also called ‘Sawan Somvar’ or ‘Shravana Somvar’. Devotees across the country will celebrate Shrawan Shivratri on July 21, 2017. While the one that comes in the month of February/March i.e. in the Hindu month of Phalguna is called Maha Shivratri. According to Hindu calendar, Shivratri comes in every month, but Maha Shivratri and Sawan Shivratri are the most significant ones.

Significance
The day marks the union of two great forces in the universe – Lord Shiva and Shakti. Devotees worship the Shiv Linga and organise Maha Rudrabhishek Puja during Shravana. It is said that observing fasts and performing pujas helps to attain stability and get rid of evil spirits. It is believed that women who fast on this day get a husband like Lord Shiva. Special pujas are arranged in ancient temples like Badrinath and Kashi Vishwanath.

How is it celebrated?
Devotees observe fasts on every Monday of the month and decorate Lord Shiva’s idol with fresh flowers. While some observe a month-long fast and have a meal on Trayodashi, a day before Shivratri. On the day of Shivratri, after finishing morning rituals devotees should take Sankalp and observe fast for the whole day and have food the next morning. While in the evening people perform Shiva puja and visit temples.
