On October 3, 1574, the population of Leiden was liberated from the Spanish besiegers. Led by Louis de Boisot, the seafaring Guezen entered the city, with herring and white bread for the hungry population. To commemorate this ‘rescue of Leiden’, herring and white bread are still given away in the city every year on October 3. Other activities also take place on that day. The reportage shows e.g. a gondola ride and a carrier-pigeon race. The film ends with an historic parade on the water.

Op 3 oktober 1574 werd de bevolking van Leiden bevrijd van de Spaanse belegeraars. Onder leiding van Louis de Boisot trokken de Watergeuzen de stad binnen, met haring en wittebrood voor de hongerige bevolking. Ter herinnering aan dit 'Leids ontzet' wordt nog steeds elk jaar op 3 oktober haring en wittebrood uitgedeeld in Leiden. Ook vinden er die dag andere festiviteiten plaats. De reportage toont onder meer een gondelvaart en een wedstrijd voor postduiven. De film eindigt met een historische optocht op het water.
