As of Sunday, nine deaths and nearly 200 cases were confirmed in the southern state of Kerala, with health officials fearing fatalities may rise to more than 40 once the results of medical reports come in. Rat fever, or leptospirosis, is spread via the urine of infected rodents, with symptoms including muscle pain and fever.
