Rashya grew up labeled “at-risk” and “under-privileged” as the daughter of a crack addicted father who was murdered and a cancer warrior mom. She graduated with honors from Central Catholic High School and the University of Toledo attaining her bachelor’s degree in political science and an MBA in finance. She is an honor graduate from the University of Minnesota Law School and practices law in the state of Ohio focusing on criminal defense and family law. Additionally, she lectures as an adjunct at the University of Toledo Law School and works as a part-time staff attorney for Advocating Opportunity, an anti-human trafficking organization. Her scholarly interests are the intersection of race, gender, and the law and constitutional law. In this talk delivered at TEDxToledo WhatNow 2018, RaShya describes how this current drug epidemic is the first to be treated as a health issue and not a criminal issue as it was when minority communities were the predominant face of drug use.
