UN Bhutto Commission to commence work in July

United Nations, New York, 19 June 2009 - The Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon has written to the President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari to inform him that the United Nation's Commission of Inquiry intot he facts and circumstances of the assassination of former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto will begin on 1 July, 2009. The Commission will commence its six month mandate next month and the Permanent Representative of Chile, Ambassador Heraldo Munoz will lead the investigation. Ambassador Munoz will submit a report of the commission's findings to the Secretary-General during this time. Mr Ban notes that 21 June marks the anniversary of the birth of former Prime Minister Bhutto. He says the date "is a reminder of the tragic loss suffered by her family and the Pakistani people".
