McConnell under fire for failure to repeal, replace "Obamacare"

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - After the Senate rejected a slimmed down health care bill on Thursday night, it's not clear if there will be any more attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare.”

The fatal and dramatic blow to the so-called “skinny repeal” was delivered by Senator John McCain, when he cast a “no” vote.

The defeat is a victory for Democrats and a major blow to President Donald J. Trump who tweeted frustration with the Senate vote.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is taking a lot of heat over that failure to repeal and replace Obamacare, much of it from within his own party.

Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks is calling on the Kentucky Senator to step down as majority leader.

That's not likely to happen, but a political analyst at Xavier University says the failure to get rid of Obamacare after running on that platform for seven years is a black eye for GOP leadership.

Particularly because Republicans now control the house, the Senate, and the presidency.

“And I think it's demoralized the Republican base in a lot of ways. There's a lot of mistrust, I think, on the part of the Republican base now that they've been promised something. John McCain ran on this. Mitch McConnel ran on this as part of his leadership package and then they don't deliver it when they have the votes to do… it’s… it's a tremendous blow to the Republican party, I think,” said Professor Mack Mariani, a political scientist with Xavier University.

While some republicans in Washington say they want to continue the health care fight, the GOP leadership says it's time to move on to other issues.
