My 7 month old is tongue tied. Will this cause speech problems? Should the tie be cut?

When a child is tongue-tied the movement of the tongue is actually restricted.  It can cause issues with breastfeeding although many kids are able to breastfeed without a problem.  If it is causing issues with gaining weight or feeding then the doctor may recommend intervention sooner rather than later.  It can also potentially cause issues with speech, not necessarily the initiation of speech but they have problems articulating later when they do start to talk, particularly with the letters t, d, z, s, n, l, and th.  So if you start to notice these issues later when your baby starts to talk and you haven't done anything about it then it might be a good idea to talk to a speech therapist.  The decision about whether or not to actually do surgery and cut the part where the tongue is tied is up to you and the practitioner.  They can discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with you and together you can decide if it would be best for your child.
