(29 Nov 2018) Kosovo's prime minister made clear on Thursday his country won't back down in its trade war with neighbouring Serbia. Ramush Haradinaj said a new 100 percent tariff on Serbian imports will remain until Belgrade recognises Kosovo's sovereignty, and stops preventing it from joining international organisations. Haradinaj told a local business conference that his government had to impose the tariffs because it needed to send a "message". The European Union previously warned Kosovo that the customs tax was a violation of the Central European Free Trade agreement. However, Haradinaj said the tax was likely to stay in force "for a very long time" because Kosovo is no longer willing to accept being "denied a place at the (negotiating) table". After a bitter conflict in the late 1990s, Kosovo seceded from Serbia in 2008. But Serbia doesn't recognise Kosovo, and recently campaigned against allowing it to join Interpol. Kosovo's bid failed this month.
