He won a mathematics scholarship to Kings College, Cambridge, where he was made a Fellow in 1951 and formed friendships with, among others, Alan Turing and EM Forster. In 1959, he left Kings to become a schoolmaster and eventually a housemaster at Eton College, where he stayed for the next 30 years. He retired in 1989 to enjoy travel, music (he played the viola), look at buildings and enjoy the many pleasures of London.
