Zika Training Programme For Caregivers

The North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) has launched a Zika Training Programme for Caregivers to address the impact of the virus on pregnant women and children. While there has been a reduction in the annual prevalence of new infections, CEO of the NCRHA, Davlin Thomas, says the country has still been on alert. He says healthcare workers are actively taking preventative measures to protect against infections, monitor suspected patients, and to provide support for families and patients infected by the virus. The project is part of the Maternal and Child Survival Programme funded by the United States Government through its US-AID Fund. The programme intends to expose participants to training and best practices for caregivers of Zika-impacted children. Many of these children require specialised care as they may face permanent brain damage and learning disabilities as a result of microcephaly - a condition that has been linked to Zika infections during pregnancy.
