In this video we discuss how to do an abdominal core rotation exercise using a resistance band. We cover the movement of your body, and what muscles are targeted with this exercise. Transcript/notes Core rotations. For this exercise you are going to need a poll or a structure to wrap a band around. For beginners, I would recommend using a thinner band that has less tension and increasing the tension in the band or using a thicker band over time as you get more comfortable with the movement, and your targeted muscles get stronger. Start by wrapping a band around a poll or secure structure and stand in an athletic position with your knees slightly bent, back straight and the poll to your right. Hold the handles of the band together with both hands secured together and your arms extended straight out with no bend at the elbow. Your hands should be in line with the poll as this will prevent the band from hitting your body as you twist during the exercise. For the exercise, start by twisting your hips and torso to your left, away from the poll, increasing the tension of the band. As you twist, keep your shoulders and hips aligned with one another, as your core muscles should be the prime movers in this exercise. Your arms should remain extended throughout the movement. Do not allow your shoulders to initiate the movement or get out in front of your hips as this will take away from the engagement of your core muscles. Twist or rotate to a point that is comfortable for you, and once you have reached this point, rotate back to the starting position, again, keeping your hips and shoulders aligned and arms extended. After you have completed a set on one side of your body, switch around and do the other side using the same technique. Your motion should be slow and controlled, exhaling as rotate your hands away from the poll and inhaling as you return to the starting position. The main muscles worked in this exercise are the abdominals and obliques as well as your shoulder muscles.
