At 10 years old Facebook has 1.2bn users - but can it stay relevant? Matt Warman offers some birthday suggestions to Mark Zuckerberg.

There are three things it could do, albeit out of a limitless range of options.

Firstly, when Snapchat turned down a multi-billion dollar offer, it showed that in Silicon Valley at least many think that there is a future for apps that offer anonymity. Does everything online really need to be preserved forever? A growing number of teenagers say no.

Facebook must work out what it needs to do to appeal to that growing army of younger users. One answer is to get significantly cleverer with what it keeps by default.
Secondly, it must also crack its involvement in shopping - we already know that the site can be hugely influential when it comes to purchases, so for it to work out how to take a cut would be a huge leap.

But above all, in developed markets Facebook's growth is now flatlining thanks to saturation. It's a victim of its own success. So the site must work towards getting more of the world online and using Facebook. That's what's behind internet.org, an organisation seeking to connect much more of the planet to the web. Its interests align with those it seeks to help - but also with Facebook's own too.
