Brass locomotives were produced in the 1950's and early 60's and sold directly by the builders in very small numbers in the United States. Akane produced a very basic Maryland and Pennsylvania 2-8-0 in HO scale in 1960. Soon the quality of these Japanese brass imports greatly improved, the prices also went up, and the model railroad hobby gained in popularity. Plastic locomotives were very affordable, bringing many new hobbyists, and high quality brass locomotives were available for those demanding only the best. This model is indicative of the time, simple yet the beginnings of what would become an art form in Japan, "mass produced" brass locomotives.
