A suspect has died after ambushing police, firing a weapon toward Clearwater police officers, officials said.

The officer-involved shooting occurred before 2 a.m. Wednesday. Investigators said officers initially responded to an apartment at 1444 Gulf to Bay Boulevard for a domestic-related welfare check of 33-year-old Annie Vann. They said the Vann sent a relative a Facebook message stating, "Help, call 911, 1444 Gulf to Bay Blvd. He has a gun."

When officers arrived, they briefly spoke to the Vann at the apartment's back door. That's when 35-year-old Wayne Falana, Jr. appeared from behind her, firing multiple rounds at the officers in what police are calling an ambush.

As officers ducked for cover, one officer was struck in the foot, but was treated at the scene. Police said Falana began shooting through a glass door at the front of the apartment, then ran into the roadway. Investigators said police returned fire in the roadway, striking Falana multiple times.

Vann, the female from the initial welfare check, also fled from the apartment, and police are searching for her. She is described at a thin, black female with green hair. She was last seen wearing a cheetah sweater and plaid pajama pants.

Police said they want to speak with her about the events leading up to the ambush. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call the Clearwater Police Department at 727-562-4317.
