Do you know about the sport of lifesaving? Originating in Australia, the sport transforms beach lifesaving activities and related training and skills into a sport, and there are competitors in other countries as well. Manami Takahashi is a third-year high school student. She has been involved in lifesaving for 12 years. Last year, she was selected as the U19 representative for Japan. Her engagement with a sport so closely linked to death gives her a perspective on the importance of life that you would never expect to hear from a high school student. She tells us drowning incidents that happened before her eyes that she will never forget. Differences in thinking between Japan and other countries that she witnessed while taking part in the World Championships. She remains devoted to her training today, in the hope that she will never see another child lose its life.

ゴールの先に救う命がある。ライフセービングという競技をご存知だろうか。オーストラリア発祥のその競技は、海における救命活動、その訓練・技術をスポーツにまで昇華させたもので、海外ではプロも存在する。高橋愛海、高校３年生。ライフセービングに携わりはや12年。昨年は、U-19日本代表にも選出された。死と隣り合わせの競技と向き合ってきたからこそ、彼女が語る命の重みはとても高校生のそれとは思えない。一生忘れられないと話す、目の前で起きた水難事故。世界大会に出て目の当たりにした、日本と海外の意識の差。二度と目の前で命を落とす子どもを見たくないという願いを胸に、今日も彼女はトレーニングに励む。

Currently attending Keio Shonan Fujisawa Senior High School
Member of the Nishihama Surf Lifesaving Club.
Started swimming in her first year of elementary school and realized the joy of beach activities in a junior lifesaving program she attended in her second year of elementary school.
Selected as Lifesaving Japan Designated Athlete-in-Training in her first year of high school and as Japanese U19 representative after winning third place in the All-Japan Championships in her second year of high school.
Achieved third place in two events in the U19 section at the World Lifesaving Championships held in Australia last October.

湘南藤沢高等部在学中。特定非営利活動法人西浜サーフライフセービングクラブ所属。小学２年生のとき参加したライフセービングのジュニアプログラムで、海で活動することの楽しさを知る。高校1年生でライフセービング日本強化指定選手に選出、高校2年生で全日本選手権3位に入賞し、Ｕ１９日本代表に選出された。昨年11月、オーストラリアで行われた世界大会Ｕ１９枠で、2種目で3位という成績をおさめた。
