In this #AskDM video we cover what is the best time during the day to send your follow up email autoresponders?

0:18 - Email autoresponders are the secret sauce of almost all effective marketing - communicating with customers on their terms, giving information when and where they ask for it, is critical. But because this kind of personalized communication requires automation to succeed, and certainly to scale, there are all kinds of questions about when do send these mails.

0:35 - The first thing is that when someone opts in for something you’re offering - a report, a tool, a checklist, whatever - you need to send it to them immediately. Don’t delay and send them an email the next day saying “here’s the ebook you wanted” - you’ll already have lost their attention. The inbox is where the battle for your customer’s attention happens each and every day and you must strike while the iron is hot.

0:54 - You’ll want to send additional follow-up emails after your initial delivery mail, to see how the customer liked what you gave them, and encourage them to look at other offers you have that fit their interests. This is where it gets tricky. You always want to send your follow-ups based off of the time they opted in - this is more likely to fit their schedule and lifestyle, rather than assuming everyone looks at their emails the same time every day. The rule of thumb is that you want to send your first followup mail within 4-24 hours after someone opts in. This is the window of time that you’ve claimed your space in their short term memory.

1: 23 - You’ll want to choose a time at the and end of that spectrum though - if you send an email 12 hours after someone opts in, there’s a good bet that they will be asleep, or at the very least not in a particularly interested state. So go with either 4 hours or 24 hours after opt-in for your first follow up. You’ll want to keep the rest of the emails in your follow-up sequence hitting their inbox every 24 hours after the first one you send. This builds familiarity and you know you’re speaking to them at the right time of day.
