Petrotrin Board And OWTU Meet Once Again

The Board of Petrotrin and the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union have been meeting once again to discuss the closure of Petrotrin. Scores of OWTU members gathered outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Wednesday morning as they awaited the outcome of the meeting between the union's President General and his delegation and the Petrotrin Directors. On Tuesday, Petrotrin Chairman, Wilfred Espinet, confirmed that all the workers of Petrotrin will be terminated and parts of the Refinery will be sold. In his reply to a letter from the OWTU on Tuesday, Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley, said the door on the purchase of the Refinery may still be open, if the union will present and commit to the rigours of an acceptable business proposal. Dr. Rowley made it clear, however, that if a more attractive proposal became available, then it must be expected that the interest of the taxpayer will take priority.
