Last week, Alex Brightman earned a Tony nomination for his starring performance as Dewey Finn in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical School of Rock. The day after he got the big news, Brightman sat down with TheaterMania to talk about his journey with the show — much of which has been shaped by the pint-sized rockstars he shares the Winter Garden with every night. He may play their teacher onstage, but it turns out he's been taking some notes of his own. In the words of Rodgers and Hammerstein, "If you become a teacher, by your pupils you'll be taught."
