A federal judge in Boston has begun hearing a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination in Harvard University's admissions. Various protesters are holding signs outside the federal courthouse. The group, Students for Fair Admissions, has accused the Ivy League school of bias against Asian-American applicants, saying it holds them to a higher standard than students of other races. Harvard denies any discrimination and says it considers race as one of many factors when considering applicants. The trial is expected to last three weeks. Harvard says that the enrollment of Asian-Americans has been rising in the last decade as a result of affirmative action. According to the website of the university’s admission office, Asian-Americans account for 22.90 percent of the 1,962 new students in the Class of 2018.
