In today's Health Alert, one in three pregnant women nationally delivers by caesarean section. Now, one local hospital has found a way to make the procedure less stressful and more like natural delivery. News 13's Jay Siltzer shows us the approach McDowell Hospital uses. Like many of Dr. Margaret Sullivan's patients, Callie Hensley was born by caesarian section at McDowell Hospital in Marion. With the new family-centered approach, mom called the shots in the special delivery room. Lynnae Hensley, mom, "it was nice to have some things that helped keep me calm. Including choosing my music, having my husband there and knowing who was in the room, having them talk with me like a down to earth kinda person." David Hensley, dad, "we knew the people in the room, light-hearted, they were talking to each other. We were both awake and alert and taking part in the conversation." With the family centered-approach, the drape between the baby being born and the mother comes down and the child is instantly placed on the mother's chest. Dr. Margaret Sullivan, Ob/Gyn, "early skin to skin contact with the newborn on the mother's chest both calms the baby's heart rate and calms their breathing down. They quiet down and start to become more alert with their eyes open. You get that instant bonding with the infant." Lynnae, "it definitely set that feeling that you first get when you have a baby into motion faster I believe. Just that awe, wonder, magic of it." Making a c-section seem more like natural delivery than ever before. Studies indicate that placing the baby with the mom before it is cleaned up helps with the overall success of breastfeeding. _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/News13/ WLOS ABC 13 News on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WLOS_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: https://instagram.com/wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Channel/?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to AnchorMOMS, the Podcast: https://wlos.com/news/anchormoms/anchormoms-the-podcast Watch more top local news stories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk8Ge6UXHJs&list=PLkVbaoT-aYbIvnEpR0Ct5QQQqYaORUSUH For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.wlos.com Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://wlos.com/watch Have a news tip?
