ISIL has targeted the Yazidi ethno-religious minority for extermination: they have relentlessly been slaughtering the men and selling the women into slavery.

Why does ISIL hate them so much?

The Yazidis practice an ancient monotheistic religion drawn from Zoroastrianism, Mithraism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. They believe that once God finished creation, He passed the everyday operations to a council of seven angels, headed by the TawuseMelek, or Peacock Angel. The Peacock Angel allows both good and evil to come into people’s lives, which has led some over-simplifiers to equate him with Satan, which in turn has meant that some have jumped to the highly erroneous conclusion that Yazidis are devil-worshippers. In any event, even though they have drawn from Zoroastrian traditions, they are not “purely” Zoroastrian, which would theoretically offer them a semblance of protection as being “People of the Book” like Christians and Jews.
