Congressmen react after ex-Peruvian president seeks asylum in Uruguay

(19 Nov 2018) Peruvian lawmakers on Monday reacted to the move by ex-president Alan Garcia seeking asylum at the Uruguayan embassy in Lima on claims he is a victim of "political persecution." Mauricio Mulder, a lawmaker with the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA), said he supports Garcia's petition "in the face of serious setbacks in the balance of powers and in the rule of law in our country." Meanwhile, lawmaker Yonhy Lescano said Peru must break diplomatic ties with Uruguay if Garcia is granted asylum. Peru's President Martin Vizcarra said on Monday the government is providing Uruguay with unspecified information to help it in its evaluation of the asylum request. Garcia is under investigation for bribes allegedly paid during the construction of Lima's metro during his 2006-2011 government.
