The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that adultery must remain a punishable offence, opposing a petition. Section 497 of the Indian Penal Code has provision to punish a man having sexual relations with another man' wife without his consent with a jail term of five years and a fine while there is no punishment for women.
