As a firefighter, EMT and lifeguard, Abbas has always loved helping people. He
was heavily involved in Hurricane Sandy emergency efforts before and during the
storm, as well as recovery efforts after Sandy struck. Abbas lives in Deer Park,
N.Y., which wasn't directly affected by flooding from the storm but suffered
damage from high winds. Following his service to his immediate community
and the communities around him in a time of need, Abbas continued to help
those affected by assisting in the start-up of Operation Resilient Long Island.

Abbas earned a B.S. in Architectural Technology with a minor in Construction
Management with Magna Cum Laude honors from New York Institute of
Technology's School of Architecture and Design. He finished his senior year
of college as the Old Westbury campus chapter president of the Construction
Management Association of America, an organization that helps students
bridge the connection between their educational work in school and the
professional world in the field of construction and project management.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
