Beijing defends Xinjiang security measures as necessary for maintaining stability

(6 Nov 2018) China's foreign ministry on Tuesday defended the nations' security measures taken in its far-western province of Xinjiang as necessary for maintaining stability and security. The comments come ahead of a review by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, on China's human rights conditions. More than one million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities have been sent into indoctrination camps since last year, sparking an outcry from human rights organizations. "The people in Xinjiang now have more sense of security and their lives and property are guaranteed, I think this is the most important thing" said spokesperson Hua Chunying. Hua also reiterated China's commitment to safeguarding its corporate interests, after the United States announced China - along with 7 other countries - will be exempt from Iran sanctions.
