As the so-called Islamic State continues to ravage communities across Iraq and Syria, thousands of women and children are left with their families torn apart, homes destroyed and futures uncertain. Beneath the surface, communities with long-lasting ethnic and religious conflict are now finding themselves in the same boat as victims of this war. In refugee camps, Kurdish Returning Ambassador Taffan Ako Sharif is working to bring these victims together and ensure they do not turn to hatred and extremism.

This session took place during the Peace & Reconciliation Plenary Session at the 2017 One Young World Summit, the world's premier forum for young leaders, in Bogotá, Colombia. The Summit brought together 1,300 delegates from more than 190 countries, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.
