How has Germany changed since the Berlin Wall fell twenty years ago? In six episodes, ARTS.21 charts the evolution of reunified Germany with reference to six works created since 1989 that reflect the countryâs main preoccupations. The third part of the series is about the artist Margret Hoppe and one of her photographs from her Vanished Pictures series. In it she shows spaces in what used to be East Germany where artworks once hung but have since been removed. In this picture, we see walls that are bare, except for five empty frames. Werner Tübke's "Five Continents" have long since been taken down and the hotel where they were on display is now disused. Hoppe's photographs document how the visual memory of communist East Germany is being lost and with it the cultural inheritance of this era.
