Should not the sexual preference be the prerogative of an individual? How can stigmatising one on the basis of their sexual preference be justified? Though LGBTs are taken in stride to a certain extent in the metropolitan cities, they are yet to gain acceptance in smaller cities like Coimbatore. Fearing ostracism and social stigma ,the LGBTs hesitate to come out in the open. Psychiatrists opine that they are prone to depression due to the constant fear of rejection and oppression . Transgenders who are legally accepted are placed a little better than the homosexuals. June, declared as the month of LGBT pride should be taken as the initiative to embrace them into the fold.
